Sunderland lose Defoe to injury

David Moyes has confirmed Jermain Defoe with miss Wednesday's EFL Cup tie against QPR but hopes he will be fit for the weekend.
The Black Cats have a dearth of striking options after failing to bring in a back-up for Defoe during the summer, eventually having to opt for free agent Victor Anichebe after the transfer window had closed.
Should Defoe go down with a serious injury then Sunderland could be in trouble and fans will get a glimpse of what life without the 33-year-old would be like when they face QPR at Loftus Road in the third round of the EFL Cup.
Moyes says he will not be taking his top scorer back to the capital with him after he picked up a minor calf problem during Sunday's defeat to Tottenham.
While the former Everton and Manchester United boss says he is taking the EFL Cup seriously, he admits it is more important Defoe is fit for the weekend when Sunderland face Crystal Palace.
"Jermain took a bit of an injury in the game – he’s got a knock – so he won’t go and more importantly I need to make sure he’s fit for the game at the weekend," said Moyes.
