Spain swing axe on Martinez

Conchita Martinez has been sacked as captain of Spain's Fed Cup and Davis Cup teams, the country's Tennis Federation has confirmed.

The 45-year-old, who had been head of the Fed Cup team since 2013 and of the Davis Cup team since 2015, has been axed having failed to guide Spain to a World Group win as captain.

Martinez, who was the first Spanish player to win the women's singles title at Wimbledon when defeating Martina Navratilova in 1994 and also won five Fed Cups as a player, did help guide the men's team back into the World Group last year and to the quarter-finals this year, but it has not been deemed good enough.

The Spanish Tennis Federation released a statement on Thursday evening saying that its board of directors unanimously decided to "make a change in the leadership of its professional teams ... in order to face new challenges in 2018."
