Targett on Villa radar
Newly-promoted Aston Villa are said to be keen on Southampton defender Matt Targett and may look to swoop this summer.
Villans boss Dean Smith is known to be in the market for defenders as he looks to build a squad capable of staying in the Premier League and left-back is an area where he needs to strengthen.
It is unclear whether the 23-year-old is in Ralph Hasenhuttl’s long-term plans at St Mary’s as he featured just 16 times in the top flight last season, with 13 starts.
The former England Under-21 star spent the second half of the 2017-18 campaign on loan at Fulham, helping the Cottagers achieve promotion and he was linked with a permanent switch to west London in the 2019 January window.
However, the Eastleigh-born star remained on the south coast as Saints finished 16th in the standings – five points above the relegation zone.
Hasenhuttl clearly has big plans at Southampton and made it clear that he does not want to see the side flirting with the drop zone again next term, and it may be that he looks to generate funds to add quality to his backline to try and shore up a rearguard that shipped 65 league goals in 2018-19.
Targett is reported to be priced at £10m and it remains to be seen if the Villa Park outfit do make a move in the next few weeks.
