Rovers close to Downing capture
Blackburn Rovers are reportedly on the verge of signing Stewart Downing on a free transfer.
England international Downing will leave Middlesbrough when his contract expires at the end of this month and he has been attracting huge interest from across the Championship and League One.
Sunderland, who lost in the League One play-off final last season, were hoping to tempt the winger into a move to the Stadium of Light, while Sheffield Wednesday were also said to be keen on a deal.
However, it appears Blackburn, who finished 15th in England’s second tier last term, have won the race for the 34-year-old’s signature and he is set to be officially confirmed as a Rovers player on July 1.
Personal terms are believed to have already been agreed and Downing, who will replace Scottish wide man Craig Conway after he left Ewood Park in May, will become the Lancashire outfits first summer signing.
