Italian champions Juventus are reportedly winning the race to sign sought-after Ajax defender Matthijs De Ligt.

Netherlands international De Ligt enjoyed a hugely successful 2018/19 campaign, having captained Ajax to the Champions League semi-finals before delivering the Eredivisie title for the 34th time in the club’s history.

The 19-year-old was also part of the Dutch side that reached the UEFA Nations League final and there has been huge interest in his services this summer from Europe’s elite sides.

Barcelona, who were said to be close to completing a deal, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Real Madrid have all been keeping close tabs on the defender’s situation.

However, it appears Juventus, now under the guidance of former Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri, have jumped to the head of the queue after reportedly agreeing a fee around 60-70million euros.

The Turin-based outfit are now set to enter formal negotiations with the player and his representatives over personal terms.
