Spurs in late bid to steal Saliba
Tottenham have made a late bid for Saint-Etienne defender William Saliba and could steal in and sign him ahead of local rivals Arsenal.
Saliba was believed to be on the verge of joining the Gunners in a deal that would have seen the 18-year-old being loaned back to the French club next season.
Arsenal had agreed a payment structure with Saint-Etienne that would have seen them pay around £27million in various installments, but now Spurs have entered the race to sign Saliba and could potentially outbid their north London rivals.
Boss Mauricio Pochettino is on the lookout for defensive recruits as Toby Alderweireld is expected to depart this summer, while Jan Vertonghen’s future is also uncertain as he has just a year left on his current contract.
Saliba, a France Under-20 international, is highly-rated, having made 19 senior appearances for Saint-Etienne, and is keen on a move to the Premier League.
It is not known how much Spurs are prepared to pay for the teenager and if they are willing to allow him to stay where he is on loan next season, but they are likely willing to pay in excess of £30million as they try and beat Arsenal to the deal.
