Spurs suffer blow in Zaniolo pursuit
Roma sporting director Gianluca Petrachi says he never put Nicolo Zaniolo up for sale, contrary to reports.
Spurs and Italian champions Juventus have been linked with a move for Italy international Zaniolo this summer and the duo were set to battle it out for the midfielder’s signature.
The 20-year-old joined Roma last summer as part of the deal moving Radja Nainggolan to Inter and the Massa-born star enjoyed an impressive debut season at the Stadio Olimpico, scoring four goals from 27 Serie A appearances.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has been looking to strengthen his midfield options during the transfer window but will have to turn his attention elsewhere.
‘I take this opportunity to say that when I appreciated Zaniolo with all the affection of this world to return to the tracks if he had left, it was immediately said that Petrachi put Zaniolo up for sale.
This is not true,’ he was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
‘I have to work to try to get the best out of Zaniolo.
I am also a very practical person, I have direct contact with my players.
I never put Zaniolo up for sale, nor did I say it was on the market.
The market is full of pitfalls but today Zaniolo is not on the market.’
