Bruce targets further new arrivals
Newcastle boss Steve Bruce is targeting further new arrivals and he feels club-record signing Joelinton will prove to be a success.
The Magpies caused a stir earlier this week when they smashed their club-record transfer fee by bringing in Brazilian forward Joelinton for a reported £40million from Bundesliga outfit Hoffenheim.
The 22-year-old is, so far, the only new player to arrive at St James’ Park this summer and there will be a weight of expectation on his shoulders given the size of the transfer fee.
Bruce is confident Joelinton will be able to cope with that pressure and ultimately prove a success in the Premier League, while he also confirmed he wants to add to his squad further before the transfer window slams shut.
Speaking on Joelinton’s arrival, Bruce was quoted as saying by the Chronicle: ‘It is a statement from the club.
We have done our homework.
‘In today’s market we feel we have good value.
‘We are doing our utmost to make sure there will be one or two more walking through the door to give us a hand.
‘ Bruce also confirmed Mike Ashley was at the club’s training ground on Wednesday and he is hoping to build a strong relationship with the club’s owner going forward.
‘Mike came in to wish myself and the staff the best of luck,’ Bruce added.
‘I think it is always key to have a positive relationship.
You need to get on with the people you work with.
‘I am not interested in what went on before.
So far he has been straight.
I have asked a couple of questions and got straight answers.’
