The Argentine has endured a tough start to life with Watford after joining from West Ham in January, featuring just three times before suffering a cruciate ligament injury, which ended his campaign prematurely.
Zarate has been working hard over the summer on his rehabilitation and recently returned to competitive action with the club’s under-23 side.
The forward netted for the junior side in a 4-2 win over Burnley on Monday and he is expected to be pushing for a first team return sooner rather than later, according to performance director Gavin Banjafield.
“Mauro’s rehabilitation is going really well. As well as full team training, he’s been exposed to two game situations and he is looking very confident,” Banjafield told the club’s official website.
“He’s still continuing to work individually on his fitness and preparation work for the remainder of the season, but he has made really good progress.”
