West Brom have opted not to hand a contract to midfielder Momo Sissoko, but have yet to make a decision on striker Marouane Chamakh.
Baggies boss Tony Pulis brought in both free agents on trial following the closure of the transfer window as he is keen to bolster his squad numbers, but cannot buy or loan players from other clubs until January.
However, it appears 31-year-old former Valencia, Liverpool, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain star, Sissoko, is lacking in the required fitness to cut it in the top flight after being watched in a 90-minute run-out for the Under-23s.
In addition to that there is also the emergence of youngster Sam Field, while James Morrison is also returning to fitness following a hamstring injury which means Sissoko would struggle for any game time.
Meanwhile, Chamakh, is still training with the team this week and has a better chance of earning a contract given that Albion only have Salomon Rondon, Saido Berahino and Hal Robson-Kanu to cover the attacking roles.
Pulis knows all about the 32-year-old Morocco international from his days in charge at Crystal Palace and wants to be certain he would do a job for Albion before committing to a deal.
"Chamakh has got real quality in that 10 position and he can score goals but we will see," said Pulis in the Express & Star.
"It would be lovely to think that in a month’s time he could be at the level he was at Palace.
"If he was at that level he would certainly be pushing people to play."
