Cox lifts lid on future plans

Simon Cox insists that he does not want to leave West Brom on loan as he is 'happy to fight for my place' at the Hawthorns.

The Republic of Ireland international has struggled for first-team action so far this season with just a two-minute substitute appearance against Manchester United and a start in the 4-1 Carling Cup victory at Bournemouth which he marked with a goal.

And, while fellow compatriot and Albion summer signing Shane Long has been picked ahead of Cox with Peter Odemwingie also close to a return from injury, the former Swindon man could be forgiven for wanting to secure a loan move to a Championship club where he would be guaranteed first-team football.

But Cox has dismissed that prospect as he aims to battle for his spot in boss Roy Hodgson's plans.

He told the Birmingham Mail: "The reason I'm not playing at club level is because we've got so many good players at the club.

"It just isn't my time at the moment. That will come. I'm a patient sort of person, it just depends how long I can be patient for before it makes me decide if it's best for me to stay or leave.

"That's a long time down the road yet and I'm happy to fight for my place. With Shane (Long) having come in and done so well so far, it's been good for us."

Cox could get an opportunity for Albion in Sunday's trip to Norwich if Long fails to overcome the calf injury which has ruled him out of Ireland's clash with the Group B leaders Russia at the Luzhniki Stadium on Tuesday.
