Gold discusses striker deal

West Ham co-owner David Gold has admitted they pulled out of a deal to sign Jermain Defoe because of his lack of sell on value.

The Hammers were linked with a £6million move for the Black Cats striker, whose goals are almost single handily helping Sunderland battle against the drop.

The Black Cats slapped a hands off warning on the striker but the Hammers were urged to up their offer and really test the water for the striker.

The Londoners eventually decided against upping their offer beyond £8million and Gold has claimed they ended their interest due to the lack of value for money the former Hammer would represent.

When urged on Twitter to up their offer for the 34-year-old, Gold replied: "How much do you think you could sell Defoe for when he is 36?"
