Doubts remain over the futures of strikers Amri Zaki and Emile Heskey so Wigan boss Steve Bruce is looking to line up replacements should the pair choose to leave in January. £4million-rated Martinez maybe seen as the ideal man to take up the goal-scoring responsibility for the Latics.
Bruce admitted he is scouring South America for more bargains following the success of Wilson Palacios, Maynor Figueroa and Antonio Valencia at the JJB Stadium but denied a deal had already been struck for the Colombian star.
Necaxa president Roberto Munoz revealed however that discussions have begun regarding a possible £4million deal for Martinez in the January transfer window.
"Wigan got in touch with us with the intention of signing Hugo Rodallega and we are having negotiations," he said.
Another striker being linked with Wigan is former Newcastle star Lomana LuaLua. The 27 year-old Congo International, who is currently plying his trade at Qatari club Al-Arabia, was wanted by Steve Bruce last year when he was in charge of Birmingham but LuaLua chose then to stay in the Middle East.
He appears to have had a change of heart however as he revealed he would not rule out a move back to the Premier League in January.
