The 19-year-old appeared to be on the verge of a move to the Sky Blues last Tuesday after both sides agreed a deal but Coventry never followed up their interest to complete the move, but that is about to change and a 93-day loan is on the brink of being finalised.
Cardiff could yet hijack the deal as they too want to take the player and are looking to pinch him from under Coventry's noses but the Midlanders still remain favourites.
Sky Blues boss Chris Coleman said: "It has dragged on a bit, but I've spoken to Sam and the chairman has spoken to Wolves and we think by next week Sam will be with us until at least January."
Boss Mick McCarthy is now hoping he gets some game time wherever he gets to, "Sam needs to go out and get matches," said McCarthy. "By doing that, he'll develop."
