Manchester United news

The Red Devils are closing in on Liverpool’s record of 18 league titles, having clinched their tenth under Sir Alex Ferguson last season.

The Scottish manager revived the fortunes of England’s best-supported club after taking the hot-seat in 1986 and has also guided United to two Champions League titles.

Ferguson followed in the tradition of former manager Sir Matt Busby who created the legendary young team, nicknamed the ‘Busby Babes’, which perished in the infamous Munich air crash in 1958.

Sir Bobby Charlton was one of the survivors of that disaster, which claimed the lives of eight players, and the World Cup winner went on to make a record number of appearances for the club.

That record was broken in May by Welsh wizard Ryan Giggs, one of the current crop of Old Trafford stars and a player brought through the youth ranks at the same time as Gary Neville, Paul Scholes and former star David Beckham.

Eric Cantona, Denis Law, Mark Hughes and Bryan Robson are former heroes of the Old Trafford crowd while the current line up is Cristiano Ronaldo, Owen Hargreaves, Rio Ferdinand, Dimitar Berbatov, Wayne Rooney, Ben Foster, Nemanja Vidic, Michael Carrick, Nani, John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher, Tomasz Kuszczak, Sam Hewson, Rodrigo Possebon, Tom Cleverley, David Gray, Ron-Robert Zieler, James Chester, Ben Amos, Federico Macheda, Richard Eckersley.
